Shafer Trail Scenic Adventure
A private guided scenic adventure through some of Moab’s most unforgettable desert views — from the Potash ponds and Thelma & Louise overlook to the Shafer switchbacks, Long Canyon, ancient petroglyphs, and the Colorado River corridor.
About This Adventure
The Shafer Trail Scenic Adventure is designed for guests who want big Moab views, rich desert history, and a memorable backcountry route without the intensity of a technical rock crawling tour.
This route blends cinematic overlooks, winding canyon roads, high desert switchbacks, and riverside scenery into one private guided experience. It is an ideal choice for families, couples, photographers, and anyone looking to experience Moab from a more scenic and relaxed perspective.
Route Highlights
Potash Ponds
The adventure begins with views of the striking blue Potash evaporation ponds set against Moab’s red rock desert landscape.
Thelma & Louise Overlook
We stop at the famous overlook where sweeping canyon views create one of the most recognizable scenic moments in the area.
Shafer Switchbacks
The route climbs the legendary Shafer switchbacks toward Island in the Sky, offering dramatic views as the road winds upward through the canyon walls.
Long Canyon
After traveling toward the Dead Horse Point area, we descend through Long Canyon with incredible views back toward Potash and the surrounding desert basin.
Potash Petroglyphs
Along Potash Road, we continue to ancient petroglyph panels near the Poison Spider trailhead and the Colorado River corridor.
A Scenic Route With Time to Take It In
This is not a rushed point-to-point drive. Your guide will make selected stops along the way for photos, views, local context, and time to appreciate the scale of the landscape.
From high canyon overlooks to riverside rock art, this route offers a full sense of Moab’s contrast — blue ponds, red cliffs, winding switchbacks, desert mesas, and the Colorado River below.
Boxed Lunch Option
A boxed lunch can be arranged in advance of departure. Menus will be provided so guests can select their preferred lunch option before the tour.
Lunch is charged separately and is not included in the base tour price. When arranged, we will plan a comfortable scenic stop along the route to enjoy the meal.
